"When online friends aren't who they seem"/ charities

Apr. 10, 2016 "When online friends aren't who they seem": I read this article in Seventeen magazine Apr. 2006 issue at the library.  This is from a long time ago, but I totally remember the story.  I'm going to paraphrase it here:

Steph is often talking to people online.  If a guy hits on her, she blocks him.  After awhile, she got 300 guys blocked.  Then later she talked to a guy online and then she felt this connection.  She invited him to her house to watch TV.  He came and she thought he was cute.  They watched TV and then started making out and had sex.  From what it seemed, it came off as consensual.

The next day, he did come over again and they had sex.  She introduced him to her little sister and he seemed to want to have sex with the sister too.

Then she got pregnant and told her mom.

That's all I remember.  I don't know what happened to the baby.

I have the Jun. 2006 issue and Lo, 19 yrs old from Orange, California wrote a letter commenting on it.  The letter:

"What did Steph expect, inviting someone she barely knew to her house?  And the number one consequence for sleeping with someone without protection is pregnancy- she's lucky she didn't get a disease too.  I'm disappointed and glad that you printed this story.  It showed girls what not to do: Don't invite the creep over, don't introduce him to your family, and- oh yeah- don't sleep with him!"

May. 2, 2016 11 yr old shoots home invader: I found this on MSN.  When I read it, I thought he had the right to shoot him.  The invader was shot, but survived.

May 15, 2016 "I was hit by a train": I read this article by Alice as told to Sarah Eisen Nanus in Seventeen magazine Dec. 2004 issue.  She is this Asian woman who got hit by a train on Dec. 10, 2001 in New York City.  She dropped her bible on the platform and the sliding doors snapped shut on her.  She couldn't go back to school because she is in so much pain.  She slowly gets around on crutches.

"On Sept. 22, I won a legal case that my parents brought against the New York Transit Authority- and was awarded $28.5 million.  The jury said that the conductor hadn't been paying attention to what he was doing.  I know it sounds like so much money- but most of it will go to pay my medical bills.  I'd trade it all in if I could have my old leg- and my life- back."

My opinion: She deserves the money to pay for her medical bills.  She would need that money to live on for a big part of her life if she isn't able to work.

"I caught my dad cheating on my mom": I read this story by Anna, 21 yrs old also in Seventeen magazine Dec. 2004 issue.  Anna's mom got a job where she worked long hours as a hotel manager.  Her dad joined a bowling league to stay busy.  Then he started spending more time out.

Anna suspects he's cheating and the mom did too.  Then a man had photos of his wife on vacation with Anna's dad and showed it to Anna's mom.  The parents fought and the dad moved out.

After 4 months, mom let dad move back in.  They have decided to work it out.

The dad Frank, 52 says this: "Reliving this indiscretion and sharing it with others is hard, but it's part of our lives and can't be changed.  I hurt and disappointed the two people I love more than anything, and I will carry that regret and sorrow for the rest of my life.  Fortunately, they love me enough to forgive me, and after working together, we are a happy family once again- perhaps even a little stronger and more appreciative of one another.  I'm very proud of my wife and daughter and their loving hearts."

Charities: This was also in Seventeen magazine Dec. 2004 issue about charities:

Muslim Women's Coalition:

In recent years, the world has awakened to a need to better understand Muslims and their faith. Many are only now realizing the contribution Islamic civilization has made to global society. For example, the principles of democracy, equality, justice, and communal welfare are inherently Islamic values introduced with the advent of the faith. Ultimately, these fundamental Islamic principles are designed to create harmony and balance in society.

The Muslim Women’s Coalition (MWC) is dedicated to upholding these and other Islamic principles by uniting American Muslim women who seek to serve the worldwide community with compassion, love and goodwill.

Mazon Canada:

Who we are

MAZON Canada is the national Jewish response to hunger. To date, our organization has allocated over 7 million dollars to frontline organizations battling hunger across Canada.

mazon (mah’zohn, n)
Hebrew for food, nourishment, sustenance

What we do

Based on the tradition of tikkun olam (healing the world), MAZON Canada raises awareness of poverty and hunger and links it with the mitzvah (obligation) of tzedakah (charity.)

Funds raised by MAZON Canada are distributed on a non-denominational basis and allocated once a year giving much needed relief to carefully vetted organizations that provide basic food needs.

Our Allocations Committee, as well as our Board of Directors, is comprised of representatives from all streams of life including rabbis, accountants, lawyers, professors and community professionals.

Angels for Sight:

"It is well documented that vision problems disproportionately affect minority populations. Access to eye care for children is woefully inadequate thereby exacerbating a situation where one in four children cannot see well enough to read. Ultimately this situation fuels the cycle of poverty resulting in juvenile delinquency, crime, unemployment and staggering illiteracy rates. Angels for Sight intends to fill the coverage gap by providing preventive vision care services to uninsured and underserved members of the community they serve."

May 16, 2016: I was reading Marie Claire 2009 issue and saw this ad for an environment website:

May 17, 2016 "How to survive the rise of robots": I cut out this article by Rohan Silva in the Edmonton Journal on Sept. 22, 2015.  It's kind of sad how robots are going to take over the humans jobs.  You have to click on Pressreader to read it.  However, robots don't have creativity, empathy, and problem-solving.

You should read this article.

Jun. 19, 2016 Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin dies: I found this on Yahoo:

Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in recently released Star Trek films, has died in a car accident at the age of 27.

The actor had risen to prominence with several blockbuster films in recent years - and has a starring role in Star Trek Beyond, which is due to be released in July.

Publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed Yelchin was killed early on Sunday morning.
According to TMZ, the star died in a "freak accident" after getting pinned between his car and a brick mailbox at his home.

Yelchin was discovered after concerned friends visited his home in San Fernando Valley, California, because he had failed to attend a rehearsal hours earlier.

An only child, Yelchin was born in Russia and moved to the US as a baby with his parents, who were professional figure skaters.

My opinion: I never saw those new Star Trek movies.  Then I went on imdb.com to see if I have seen him in something else.  He was on an ep of Criminal Minds:

"A young man seeks out Reid for help regarding his fantasies of killing prostitutes, just as a serial killer starts brutalizing prostitutes near the capitol."

This was a long time ago, but if I remember correctly, he plays the young man.

This is some sad news.

My week:

Jun. 20, 2016 Complaints: Here is some mild complaints.  I got to watch a free preview of Bravo.  It's a limited preview, and I thought I could get a month of it free like I did with Showcase in Jan. 2016.

Animal Kingdom: I then recorded the TV show Animal Kingdom:

The series centers on 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Craig, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious "baby" of the family.

Even if I can only watch the pilot, that would be fine.  I was unable to record it, because then my free preview turned to OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.  I went on Bravotv.com and it doesn't have a full episode of Animal Kingdom on it.

Guilt: I saw the promo for this show on Bravo and I wanted to see it, but I can't.  It's not on Bravotv.com either.

"Revolves around an American student in London whose roommate is murdered."

Pretty Little Liars: This show will debut their new season on Bravo, and I can't get it on the Bravotv.com either.  I then looked it up on M3 which is where I watch it on.  It's supposed to come out on Jun. 21, 2016 on Bravo, so it would probably come on M3 too.  I looked it up on my TV and M3 isn't airing it on that date.

However, there is a chance M3 may be airing it later in the summer.

Jun. 21, 2016 Moon Point: I was looking up Kyle Mac and here is this movie he did.  He plays a guy in an electric wheelchair.  It looks like a really fun, funny, quirky road trip kind of movie.

"Moon Point is the funny, quirky story of Darryl Strozka, an ambitionless 24-year old who travels hundreds of miles in a wagon hooked onto the back of his friend's electric wheelchair. He embarks on this quest in hopes of tracking down Sarah Cherry, his elementary school crush, now an obscure B-movie actress"

Here's another trailer and it has some stand out lines like:

"I forgot, you're just trying to hit a giant restart button on life."

"Sometimes our hearts drive us more than our brains."

I wrote the above this morning.  Now I'm looking to see if it's on Netflix (on the internet) and it isn't.  I will probably have to buy it on Amazon.ca to watch it.  I'm going to type the above quotes in my inspirational quotes.

Fall 2016 TV shows: I've been trying to stay away from learning about new shows, because I don't want to get too ahead of myself.  I get updates from CW Containment's TV show Facebook page, and it mentions the fall lineup.

Frequency:

A police detective in 2016 discovers that she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father; Frank Sullivan, a detective who died in 1996 and the two must work together to change the history of tragic events to come while also getting the chance to heal their complicated relationship.

My opinion: I will check out the pilot.

No Tomorrow:

Evie, a risk-averse quality-control assessor who falls for free-spirited thrill seeker Xavier only to find out he lives his life that way because he believes the apocalypse is coming.

Jun. 23, 2016 Time after Time: I also heard about this on Facebook.

The adventures of young H.G. Wells and his time machine.

Jun. 24, 2016 Filmmakers Meetup: On Wed. I went to the meetup and I met this Asian girl E who has a similar voice to my co-worker S.

On Thurs. I went to the Screenwriters Meetup and I met a new guy M who came.  There were 5 of us.

The cool thing was this: Randy said that he knows Travis Milne.

Tracy: What?  From Rookie Blue?
Randy: Yeah.

They went to college together.  I went to imdb.com and it says Milne was born in Fort McMurray and then raised in Lac La Biche.

Jun. 27, 2016 Between: This show is coming with the 2nd season on Thurs. Jun. 30 on City TV and Netflix.  I told this guy D at Screenwriters Meetup to watch the show.  He emailed me saying he saw the pilot on Netflix and liked it.

Jun. 28 Ziplining: I went ziplining for the first time at West Ed mall.  It was like $15 for 1 ride or $20 for 2 rides when it first came out.  I wasn't that interested in it.  However, I was able to get a discount to go through it for 1 ride.  It was going to expire on Jun. 30 so I did it.  I was scared and nervous, but I did it.

It was fun and a easy ride.  I thought it may be like the time I went on the rollercoaster at Galaxyland and it was too scary to be fun.

I feel good that I faced my fear.
